An interview with Alyse, recipient of the 2023 NESA Scholarship, about her experiences in Scouting and the impact of becoming an Eagle Scout
Being recognized for one’s accomplishments is a feeling that cannot be easily put into words. It is a moment of immense pride and gratitude, validating the hard work and dedication put into a particular endeavor. When Alyse, Troop 3030, a remarkable young individual, was awarded the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) Lawrence S. and Mabel Cooke Scholarship (National Service Territory 2), she couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of joy and honor. Alyse shares her thoughts on the journey that led her to become an Eagle Scout and its impact on her life.
Congratulations, Alyse, on being selected to receive the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) Lawrence S. and Mabel Cooke Scholarship Award! One recipient is chosen from each National Service Territory (NST)! NESA Scholarships are awarded to Eagle Scouts who have actively participated in school, Scouting activities, and community service and demonstrate they understand the fundamentals of service to the community, service to Scouting, and their character.
Alyse’s journey towards achieving the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout began when girls were welcomed into the Scouts BSA program in 2019. Having been a part of Venturing for several years prior, she was already familiar with the ranks and the path to becoming an Eagle Scout. She felt motivated by the positive support and encouragement she received from her fellow Scouts and adult leaders.
“And amidst some challenges, there was also a lot of positivity and encouragement. I used that support to keep working toward what I wanted to accomplish,” Alyse recalls.
She seized every leadership role and opportunity that came her way, making the most of each Scouting event. Despite the challenges she faced, Alyse focused on her goals, cherishing the moments of growth and camaraderie along the way.
Being an Eagle Scout has made a big difference in Alyse’s life and changed her into who she is now. The experience taught her many important leadership skills and gave her more confidence. She also formed really strong friendships with other Scouts that will always be important to her.
“Scouting has prepared me for life and has made me a better, more respectful person…[And] the experiences I’ve had and the connections I’ve made are immeasurable. I am grateful for the adults and fellow Scouts who have supported me throughout this journey,” Alyse shares.
When asked about the impact of specific experiences or projects she undertook as part of her Eagle Scout journey, Alyse reflects on the lessons learned from every endeavor. Each project was important in its own way, but the overall collection of experiences truly influenced her character.
While Alyse plans to use the NESA Scholarship to pursue a Special and Elementary Education degree at Northern Arizona University, she also intends to continue her Scouting journey. With a strong desire to give back, Alyse hopes to mentor and support other young individuals who embark on the same path she once did. She believes that the lessons and values learned in Scouting are crucial for personal growth and preparation for the future.
As our dialogue draws to a close, Alyse offers some valuable advice to families interested in pursuing Scouting. She emphasizes the inclusivity of the program, encouraging everyone to get involved and participate in the many opportunities available. Alyse fondly shares her family’s ten-year-long association with the Boy Scouts of America, underlining the memories and bonds they have built together.
“Even if youth don’t want to focus on rank, attending events and creating connections with other Scouts and leaders can be an impactful experience,” Alyse advises.
Alyse’s journey to becoming an Eagle Scout is a testament to her resilience, determination, and spirit. Her accomplishments serve as an inspiration to young individuals looking to make their mark in the world. As she ventures into the next chapter of her life, Alyse carries with her the invaluable lessons learned in Scouting, ready to make a positive impact in the field of education and beyond.
