On Friday, October 27, 2023, the Grand Canyon Council BSA hosted the much-anticipated 2023 Sporting Clays Classic Tournament at Arizona's second-largest shooting range.
This exciting event brought together avid shooters, sponsors, and volunteers for a day filled with friendly competition, delicious food, and a strong sense of community.
The event’s main focus was teams competing head-to-head, with each team shooting 75 rounds at 13 challenging stations. Besides the team competitions, individual shooting activities added extra excitement. Participants could show off their sharpshooting skills while exploring Arizona’s beautiful landscape.
One of the standout features of this year’s tournament was the impressive raffle with items worth over $2,500. This engaging raffle helped raise vital funds to support over 5,000 young men and women participating in Scouting programs across central and northern Arizona.

Congratulations to the top three teams:
- 1st Place: Sacks Tierney, led by Mike Rooney, with Larry Abbott as the high shooter overall.
- 2nd Place: Ruger & Co
- 3rd Place: UA Local 469 led by Richard Hudson
The event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of its sponsors, including Sturm, Ruger & Co., El Dorado Holdings Inc., and UA Local 469. Their contributions made a significant impact on the tournament’s success. The 2023 Sporting Clays Classic Tournament raised over $32,000, which will go directly toward supporting Scouting programs and ensuring that young Scouts across the region have access to valuable experiences and opportunities.
A big thank you to Troop 54 in Mesa for their dedicated volunteers who made the event run smoothly. They helped with the raffle, collected range cards, and provided friendly meet-and-greet services, and their efforts were greatly appreciated.
