Ready to take your outdoor adventures to new heights?
The BSA Climbing Instructor Level 1 Training kicked off this weekend, led by passionate instructors Dwain Wiltbank, Dave Hinkle, and Riely Bradley! From mastering essential knots to hands-on “on the rocks” training, participants like Kim, Henry, Tabitha, Henry, JZ, RJ, Jason, and Jess geared up to become certified instructors. But it’s not just about the thrill – climbing and rappelling offer practical skills like rescue techniques and equipment handling, all while boosting confidence! Read the full article now!
In February, the BSA Climbing Instructor Level 1 Training launched as the GCC Climbing Committee sets out to empower BSA adult leaders to become instructors in climbing and rappelling in the Grand Canyon Council BSA. You might wonder, “Why in the world would you ever want to launch yourself off a 60-foot cliff?” Well, there are several practical reasons why climbing and rappelling can be used in rescue, and it is a way to bring equipment from a higher position to a lower position. Still, Scouters should learn climbing and rappelling because it is a thrilling way to boost confidence! Plus, a climbing and rappelling activity with proper training and supervision can significantly increase the Scouts’ confidence!
To take the BSA Climbing Instructor Level 1 Training, the trainees studied and prepared several useful knots, attended two online meetings, completed an all-day “on the rocks” training at the Heard Scout Pueblo, and they will return to help instruct at a GCC Climbing and Rappelling event for Scouts BSA youth on March 23, 2024. The training was led by Dwain Wiltbank, Dave Hinkle, and Riely Bradley. It’s engaging and fun; each trainer demonstrates their passion for this unique and exhilarating activity. The in-person training using the EDGE Method was super effective! The goal is to help each person taking the course become an effective instructor so that Scouts can experience this activity in a fun and safe environment.
Attending the training and on their way to being certified as BSA Climbing Instructor Level 1 are Kim, Henry, Tabitha, Henry, JZ, RJ, Jason, and Jess.
Next, the same trainees get to use their newly developed skills to help instruct youth at a “sold out” GCC Climbing and Rappelling event on Saturday, March 23rd, at the Heard Scout Pueblo. The GCC Climbing Committee also has another exciting climbing and rappelling event at the Heard Scout Pueblo on Saturday, April 27, 2024. Sign-up here: https://scoutingevent.com/010-82059
Plans are also in motion for a Fall BSA Climbing Instructor Level 2 training.
