From Eagle Scout to NESA Scholar—A Journey of Leadership and Dedication

Celebrating an Inspiring Journey: Connor Carlson's Path to the NESA Scholarship

Connor Carlson’s journey through Scouting is a testament to dedication, leadership, and a passion for service. As the 2024 recipient of the NESA Scholarship, Carlson’s story is both inspiring and a reflection of the values that Scouting instills.

Growing up in Phoenix, Arizona, Connor Carlson was immersed in a Scouting family. “In my family of five, we have four Eagle Scouts,” he says proudly. His father, himself, and his two younger brothers all achieved the prestigious rank. For Connor, Scouting was more than a family tradition; it was a path to personal growth and achievement. “What inspired me to become an Eagle Scout was seeing the role models in Scouting and realizing the valuable life skills I would gain on the journey,” he reflects.

Connor’s Scouting career has been nothing short of impressive. Over his 12 years in the program, he has earned 61 merit badges, eight Eagle Palms, and multiple religious awards. His roles have ranged from Patrol Leader to Assistant Scoutmaster, and he was honored with the Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow. Notably, he earned his Eagle Scout award at the young age of 14. “Since earning my Eagle Scout rank, I’ve been more active in Scouting than ever before,” Connor shares. His commitment is evident in his leadership roles within his troop and his extensive involvement with the Order of the Arrow.

The decision to apply for the NESA Scholarship was driven by a desire for recognition and financial support. “I saw this as an opportunity to get recognition for the many hours of service I’ve dedicated over the years and to alleviate financial stress for my education,” Connor explains. His application highlighted his Scouting positions, awards, and significant experiences, such as his impactful two-week stint with the Order of the Arrow Trail Crew at Philmont Scout Ranch.

Receiving the Lawrence S. and Mabel Cooke Scholarship is set to make a significant impact on Connor’s academic and career aspirations. “This scholarship will allow me to focus on my studies and future success without worrying about financial burdens,” he says. Connor plans to attend Arizona State University in the Fall of 2024, pursuing a degree in Engineering. His goal is to work for a company that develops products for outdoor adventures, combining his passion for the outdoors with his professional ambitions.

Looking back, Connor credits Scouting with shaping his personal and academic growth. “Scouting has pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me realize that challenging myself opens up opportunities I wouldn’t have otherwise experienced,” he notes. His advice to other Eagle Scouts considering scholarships is to stay actively involved in their communities and Scouting. “Take advantage of all the opportunities Scouting offers, and you’ll grow in ways you didn’t even think possible.”

As he begins his college journey and beyond, Connor Carlson remains committed to giving back to Scouting and supporting future leaders.
