On Monday, September 23, 2024, the annual Trail to Leadership Luncheon took place at the Arizona Biltmore in Scottsdale. This prestigious event, attended by over 450 guests and 40 Scouts, celebrated the impact of Scouting in Arizona. Aimed at raising funds to support local Scouting programs, the luncheon was more than just a fundraiser; it was a testament to the power of community, leadership, and the development of future generations. Hosted by Grand Canyon Council, Scouting Arizona, and supported by the ASU Foundation for a New America University as the Presenting Sponsor, the event brought together business and community leaders to highlight the life-changing influence of Scouting on Arizona’s youth.
This year’s Trail to Leadership Honoree, Tony M. Astorga, was recognized for his significant contributions to the Phoenix community, particularly his leadership at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona and his dedicated work supporting Hispanic communities. Known for mentoring emerging business and community leaders, Astorga reflected on his roots in rural Arizona during his heartfelt acceptance speech. He attributed his success to Scouting, saying, “Scouting gave me the leadership skills and resilience I needed to overcome obstacles and achieve my dreams.”
Astorga’s story resonated deeply with the attendees, reinforcing the luncheon’s primary goal. Over $292,000 was raised in support of local Scouting programs. These funds will ensure that Scouting programs remain affordable for Arizona families, providing a safe environment where young people can develop crucial leadership and character traits.
Dr. Michael Crow, president of Arizona State University and event co-chair, delivered an inspiring keynote address. He emphasized the importance of Scouting in today’s challenging world, noting, “Scouting fosters resilience, leadership, and community engagement, helping young people navigate a complex society and become responsible citizens.”
The event also featured remarks from John Graham, a committed supporter of Scouting, who shared moving experiences of local Scouts and emphasized the luncheon’s unique fundraising opportunity: all donations made during the event would be matched. “Every dollar invested in Scouting today amplifies our ability to change young lives and strengthen community bonds,” Graham said.
Andy Price, CEO of the Grand Canyon Council, delivered an impactful message reflecting on Scouting’s past and its rebranding as “Scouting America.” Price emphasized the organization’s commitment to inclusivity, welcoming all youth regardless of background, while celebrating the legacy of Scouting’s 114 years of service. “Our future is bright, with Scouting playing a vital role in developing character, leadership, and citizenship among today’s youth,” Price said.
