The 2024 Geronimo “Prehistoric-ree” Camporee took place from October 18–20 at Camp Geronimo, where mysterious and exciting events seem to unfold every third weekend of October. In past years, attendees have encountered pirate ships, Loch Ness monsters, and mischievous monkeys. This year, the camp was transported millions of years back in time as dinosaurs roamed its trails!
Hosted by the Black Mountain Chapter of the Grand Canyon Council’s Order of the Arrow, the Camporee brought Scouts and Scouters together for a weekend of prehistoric fun and skill-building. Under the leadership of Camporee Chief Savannah Wendt, 380 participants from 33 council units traveled back to the age of dinosaurs.
Scouts competed in themed activities such as rifle shooting, axe throwing, fire starting, first aid, wilderness survival, orienteering, and pioneering. Challenges tested both physical and mental skills, with every station incorporating elements of the prehistoric theme. Scouts embraced the fun and engaged enthusiastically with the dedicated staff.
Adult leaders, humorously dubbed “fossils,” had their share of fun too, competing in games like disc golf and cornhole while enjoying fellowship. These activities fostered connections among leaders as they shared stories of triumphs and challenges faced by their units.
While the dinosaurs have disappeared, the fun isn’t extinct! Mark your calendars for next year’s adventure, scheduled for October 17–19, 2025. We hope to see you all there for another unforgettable Camporee!
