Troop 329 and Troop 3329’s Second Annual Backpack Cooking Challenge

A Culinary Showdown to Remember!

A backyard was transformed into a bustling outdoor kitchen as Troop 329 and Troop 3329 hosted their second annual Backpack Cooking Challenge—a thrilling event that showcased the Scouts’ creativity, teamwork, and culinary flair. With eight patrols competing head-to-head, the stakes were high, the flames were hot, and the secret ingredient—plantain chips—was revealed in dramatic fashion!

The Winning Patrol: Wolverine’s Culinary Triumph

Emerging as the champions of the night, the Wolverine Patrol wowed the judges with their innovative chicken, rice, and quinoa madras lentil creation, served with tortillas for a hands-on dining experience. They rounded out their meal with a refreshing fruit salad, mastering the MyPlate guidelines and earning top marks for taste, presentation, and creativity. Their seamless incorporation of the secret ingredient was the cherry on top of an unforgettable dish!

A Feast of Creativity

The competition was nothing short of extraordinary, with each patrol putting their unique spin on outdoor cooking. From hearty chicken ramen to bean and chicken burritos infused with unexpected peas, every dish told a story of resourcefulness and flavor. Scouts went beyond their usual “spaghetti and sauce” comfort zone, crafting meals that could rival those of seasoned chefs.

The Judges and the Drama

Presiding over the culinary chaos were three esteemed judges: Katie Gullette, a retired school teacher with a refined palate; Allen Henry, the troop’s Eagle advisor; and Willie Chuang, the troop’s assistant Scoutmaster and someone who knows a thing or two about food being a Gastroenterologist. Their discerning taste buds and lively commentary added to the excitement as they sampled each patrol’s masterpiece.

Of course, what’s a Scout cooking event without a few surprises? From a minor stove casualty to the impromptu inclusion of the secret ingredient halfway through the challenge, the event kept Scouts and spectators on their toes. The learning moments—like managing heat, timing, and teamwork—proved just as valuable as the competition itself.

More Than a Meal

While the competition was fierce, the true reward lay in the experience. Scouts gained confidence in their outdoor cooking abilities, expanded their meal repertoire, and discovered that even plantain chips could elevate a meal to greatness. The event underscored the importance of creativity, collaboration, and adaptability—skills that will serve them well both on and off the trail.

Looking Ahead

As the propane stoves faded, one thing was clear: the Backpack Cooking Challenge has cemented its place as a troop tradition. With memories of this year’s event fresh in everyone’s minds, the Scouts are already brainstorming how to up the ante for next year. One thing’s for sure—their taste buds and imaginations will be ready for the adventure!
